Silent Saturday, October 8th, 2011 - League Wide - 09/29/2011

To: All SRSL Directors, Coaches, Referees, Parents

From: The SRSL C&D Commission

Re: Silent Saturday, October 8th, 2011 - League Wide - (One Day Only)

The concept of “Silent Sunday” originated over 10 years ago. It is a day for the players. Over the years, the concept has been used by a number of different leagues across the country. The SRSL introduced “Silent Saturday” to the league in the Spring of 2010 with some success.

For the idea to work, parents and coaches are not permitted to instruct their players on the field during the course of the game. Coaches may notify the referee for substitutions and talk to their teams between quarters. Everyone is urged to cheer throughout the game. This will allow players on the field to communicate amongst themselves and make decisions on the field without the assistance of parents and coaches. In addition, this will also allow the referees a chance to better develop their skills without the constant criticizing of the coaches and parents.

This would be enforced throughout all of the cities in the SRSL (U7 through U14 age brackets).

Now, the big question; what if a coach, parent, or spectator decide not to abide by the rule? The SRSL C&D Commission has developed disciplinary actions to follow for that day.

Any coach, parent, and/or spectator who do not adhere or notifies the referee that they refuse to follow “Silent Saturday”, or claim they knew nothing about the day will be warned on the spot and be told to abide to the rule. Refusal to do so will result in an immediate RED card for the coach and an ejection for the parent or spectator and they must leave the field. In addition to the red card, the coach, parent and/or spectator will also be suspended for the next game.

SRSL Rules of Administration
1.8.2 Coaching is prohibited from the spectator side.
1.8.2.2 The coach is responsible for his/her team’s parents and spectators.

If there be any questions or concerns, please contact your director or the SRSL C&D Commission @ CandDcommission@srslonline.org.
Directors, please make sure to remind referees if they red card a coach or parent that they fill out a Referee Incident Report. It must include the name of the individual involved.
